The Juinors have an European championship (Are there other continental junior championships, we could write about?) this year. Yesterday we saw, which scores they need to participate in a FEI event. Today we take a look, how the Germans choose their most promising athletes.
The German governing body published the selection trial for juniors in November on their website. There are two interesting things about this short time table:
- In the past Germany had no selection trial for junior PDDs. If they sent them to the championships then it was not really clear to me how they choose them. The history of German pairs at the championships is not that rich of medals or even participations. In 2012, the first year of junior PDD, Gera Marie Grün & Justin van Gerven won silver, the second PDD ended up on the last rank. In 2013 the successful pair from Cologne won another medal, this time bronze. In 2014 & 2015 no junior PDDs were nominated for Germany.
- Secondly, there are a lot of “as the circumstances require” in this selection trial. Of course the athletes have to reach the FEI required scores but other than that they can visit CVIs or don’t. Or maybe there will be regional trials. The national coach will decide this during the year.
The main trial will be in Warendorf May, 27 – 29. If it wasn’t possible to decide there, the vaulters, horses & lungers have to compete in Krumke in June.
But on the other hand we have the following sentence in the “Rundschreiben 2015“:
Bei überzeugender Leistung behalten sich die Arbeitsgruppen Nachwuchs- und Spitzensport vor, Kandidaten / Pferde der Longlist bereits vor Abschluss des Sichtungsweges für das jeweilige Championat zu nominieren.
Which means: If the athletes show convincing performances, the selectors can nominate them early. Oh ha, now I am really confused when we can expect a decision & what counts. But here is how it looks like over the year:
Who do you expect at this years European championship for juniors in Le Mans representing Germany? Which squad? Which individuals and PDD? Who will surprise us? Who will come back?
Update February 18, 2016: I totally forgot to give you the dates of the regional trials. There are 3 of them, the one in the north of Germany (which had no venue when the schedule was published) & the trial in the middle in Münster will take place on March 19, 2016, the regional trial in the south in Kriftel will follow on the next day.
