Vaulting Around The World: Gran Canaria

Vaulting is a sport in constant growth. Every year we see new CVIs, new teams and new clubs being part of our community.

We have already talked about the Netherlands in December and today, we are gonna tell you the story of Club de Volteo Maspalomas, from the Canary Islands.

Just so we start off on the same page, let’s all remember that the Canary Islands is a small spanish archipelago located between Spain and Morocco

Our guide on this tour will be Lisa González, a vaulter and lunger who was so kind to tell us about the sport on the Canary islands. There are currently only two clubs there, one in Gran Canaria and another in Tenerife, but they are able to go to competitions in mainland Spain, using shared horses, and have big plans to grow and achieve better results.

The Club de Volteo Costa Maspalomas

A little bit about us the Club de Volteo Costa Maspalomas:

We are based in the south of the island of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands (Spain) in El Salobre Horse Riding Centre.

We first started our club at the beginning of 2002 with trainers Molly and Crispin Salmons who have had connections to the horse world since childhood.  We began with 8 vaulters and in March of that year, we had the privilege of attending a clinic with Ana de Ruíz, Ararat Martín and Primavera Ruíz in Gran Canaria and soon after visited their center in Zaragoza, where we spent a week of intensive training in preparation for the Spanish National Championships in Murcia.

We returned from Murcia with a Silver Medal for ‘pas de deux’ (Lisa & Aroa), a Bronze in ‘Female Individual’ (Laura) and a fourth place for our team (Aroa, Romina, Carina and Tamara).  We have returned to the National Championships each year and have always had medal winners in our team.

Here are the results for the Club de Volteo Costa Maspalomas:

2003 Bronze Female Individual Lisa
4th place Female Individual Laura
2005 Gold Female Individual Lisa
Bronze Teams Lisa, Judith & Moana
2006 Gold Female Individual Lisa

The next Spanish National Championships were held in 2011 where Lisa González won the Silver Individual Female.
In 2012 Lisa joined Molly Salmons as part of the training team and once again achieved a Silver Medal for Femail Individual.
Kirsten (Kitty) Schmidt and Ararat Martin visited us for a training clinic (december 2012) and in 2013 the team took part in the National Championships in Mallorca
2013 Silver Individual Female Nationals Lisa

We also attended Ararat`s vaulting camp in Madrid that was followed by II Ararat Martín´s Vaulting Cup where we also had more success.
Silver Individual Female Ararat´s Vaulting Cup. Lisa
Silver ‘pas de deux’ Lisa and Bárbara
Bronze Teams Acorán, Bárbara, Michelle, Alina, Melissa, Eliane & Andrea.
Barrell Competition Gold Michelle & Melissa.
In 2014 the Spanish National Championships were once again held in Mallorca where Lisa took Bronze Medal Female Individual.

Every year that we have competed we haven´t done it on our own horse, we have always shared a place on horses that are at the competitions, and we would like to say thank you to all those other clubs that have given us the oportunity to compete on their horses.

Over the past 13 years we have been asked to give vaulting exhibitions at numerous major horse competitions and events in both Gran Canaria and Tenerife and have held training clinics for existing and new vaulting clubs in the islands.

Our aim is to make vaulting more popular here in the islands, this year we are going to have the first ever vaulting competition in the Canary Islands that will take part in April 2015. We are also planning to go to this years Nationals that will be held in Segovia in June with the members of our team who are: Lisa, Michelle, Melissa, Alina, Eli, Marcos, Aythami, Sahra, Tesa and trainer Molly.

We would like to thank the Federación Canaria de Hípica for helping us reach our goals and specially the parents and El Salobre Horse Riding.

Excellent idea Adele, great to see other small clubs and how they operate in countries far from the main vaulting countries. The idea of the world map with the club’s pinned on so we can all see how widely spread the interest is can also help when looking for sponsorship.

Thank you so much. Do you want to write some lines, too? The idea with the map isn’t from us but I will talk to the woman to see what we can do with it.
